Vintage Rust Tutorial

Hi and welcome! I am back with a second post for today, by coincidence also using alcohol ink. It is a Sizzix tutorial, for some cool rusty effects using Ranger's embossing powder and alcohol ink.

I made an art journal page in my large Dylusions journal, but the techniques work as well on any type of project. It is such fun playing around with rusty distress techniques and you can achieve really cool effects, without any bulk. I used Sizzix dies by Jen Long, Prima and Tim Holtz.

Start by preparing a piece of Ranger's Foil sheet. You'll need a larger piece than shown here. Put some alcohol ink on a felt applicator and pounce on the foil until you are happy with the result.

Immediately sprinkle some Ranger Rust embossing powder into the alcohol ink. The ink dries fast and the powder won't stick well. To prevent it from flying off, melt with a heat tool from underneath. Be careful since the metal gets hot.

Drip some more alcohol ink on the background, creating cool splotchy effects where the embossing powder is.

Using the Vintage Car & Radio set, die cut the car from glossy cardstock, the wheels from kraft-core cardstock and the rest of the pieces from the prepared metal. Placing a piece of wax paper between the die and the surface to be die cut makes it easier to get a good cut and to get the paper out of the die.

Repeat with the Route 66 sign.

Apply Stonewashed and a tiny bit of Ginger to the felt and swipe over the car.

Apply embossing ink here and there on the car with a Ranger Emboss It Dabber. Sprinkle Rust powder on top. If it is too much, you can brush off some of the powder. Melt with a heat gun.

Pounce and drip more alcohol ink on the car for an old worn look.

Again apply alcohol inks to the felt applicator and pounce on the glossy sign.

Adhere the metallic and cardstock pieces. If you want to, you can add some more Pitch Black ink.

Prepare a piece of glossy cardstock by swiping alcohol ink over it, using the same colours as for the car. Pounce and drag the Emboss It dabber here and there and sprinkle Rust powder on top. Don't worry too much about how it looks.

Die cut butterflies from this piece. Add some more alcohol ink to the butterflies here and there.

Die cut the fun Rondeaux gears from the prepared foil. You'll also get a bunch of small hearts, keep these too.

For the title, I used Tim's new Alphanumeric set, which are very simple to use together with the Magnetic Platform. Use a cutting pad above and below the paper and dies.

I used a page from an old map book and covered it partly with gesso, using a palette knife.

When the gesso is dry, paint with Antique Linen and Walnut Stain.

When dry, add a watery mix of Tumbled Glass and Stormy Sky.

Use the Emboss It dabber around the edges and here and there. Sprinkle rust powder and emboss.

Stamp the background with various sentiment and background stamps. Add some Black Soot around the edges and splatter some more here and there.

The rusty old car has a great textured look to it. I am not so sure I would want to drive around in it though. I layered it on an inked piece of dictionary paper, about the word 'car'.

These butterflies are real pretty. Add one of the hearts to the body of each butterfly.

The very worn Route 66 sign was maybe my favourite part of the project. Love the combination of the rusty metal and brown splotchy background.

For the larger letters, I used the Lowercase Block Talk die.

Aren't these gear dies great? There are nine in the pack, so plenty of different ones.

I also added a layer of cheese cloth, dyed with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

Thank you so much for looking! I hope you enjoyed this rusty old tutorial.

Happy crafting!

12 tags of 2014 September

Hello all! In the very last minute, here is my version of Tim Holtz 12 tags of 2014 September.

Instead of using the face of the woman that Tim used, which I stamped on a canvas posted yesterday, I decided to make an autumn tag. I used the Harlequin stencil for the alcohol ink background, but you hardly see it through the stamping and rub-ons.

The leaves were die cut with the Autumn Gatherings die and stamped with an alphabet background stamp. I liked the faded effect of the technique.

The gold mixative gives a great shine to the leaves.

It is always fun to use rubs, all these small words are favourites of mine.

Thank you so much for looking!

Happy stamping!

Art Mini Canvas

Hello stampers! STAMPtember is almost over at Simon Says Stamp, I hope you have enjoyed it. For our challenge this week at Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge we are adding stamping as a finishing touch to projects.

http://www.simonsaysstamp.com/

My project for this week:
I made a little mini canvas (4 x 4 in) using stamps, ink, paint and a stencil. Stamping works for any project, big or small and just a little bit of stamping, such as the cracks here can add a great finishing touch to a project.

I started by coating the canvas with gesso and when dry painted it with Antique Linen. I added some stencilling using Frayed Burlap and just a little bit of Broken China. For this project, I wanted to try doing all the stamping on a single piece of tissue paper, rather than to stamp the images on separate pieces and piece them together on the background. You have to use a permanent ink for this technique, I used Jet Black Archival Ink.

Paint a thin layer of glossy multi medium on the canvas and carefully place the tissue on top. Don't worry if it wrinkles a little. Paint another layer of multi medium on top of the tissue paper.

I painted the stamped images lightly with Distress Paint and also added some splatters with the Specks stencil. The edges were embossed with Ranger's Platinum Embossing Powder, using the Emboss-It Dabber to apply embossing ink first.

For her hair, I used Sprocket Gears and Mini Gears, all were altered with Distress Paint. Her face was also lightly painted with Distress Paint, especially Tattered Rose.

A is for 'Art' and also the first letter of my name. I smeared Ranger's Embossing Paste through a stencil and painted it when dry.

I like the way the layers look with the paint, stencilling stamped tissue paper and then more paint.

I also painted and added some embossing powder to the edges, for a finished look.

I hope you will join us this week, as every week, one random participant wins a $50 gift voucher from Simon Says Stamp.

Dinosaur layout

Hi and welcome! I hope your weekend had a good start. There is a new CSI:Color, Stories, Inspiration challenge up. Here's the case file:

My layout:

I made a layout about a very cool dinosaur exhibit we went to recently. An amazing place for a little boy interested in dinosaurs, even though some of them that moved around and made noise were a little scary. From the evidence I used: Glossy Accents, leaves, music paper and layers. The testimony is inspired by the something strange theme and I was going to tuck it in between the layers but only remembered about that once I had adhered everything together. For the background, I used the back of one of the papers in Tim Holtz Destinations Paper Stash, which looks a little like the skin of a dinosaur. Behind the photo there are layers of three manila papers which were coloured with Distress Ink and stamped with three background stamps. The purple paper is inked Motif Resist cardstock and I also used some vellum ephemera pieces.

The background was stamped with a grid stamp and with two sentiment stamps. I like the way you can peek the other layers through the vellum pieces. The title letters were die cut from white mat board with the Block Talk Lowercase die, inked with Dusty Concord, sanded and coated with Glossy Accents.

A second sentiment, partly hiding behind leaves die cut from kraft-core cardstock.

I dyed cheese cloth with Distress Inks and added it in between the layers. There is also a piece of Linen Ribbon (I love linen ribbon) and more vellum layers.

Thank you so much for visiting today!

Happy crafting!

Lucky Dog Accordion Card

Hello everyone! Today I have a quick post to share of a Sizzix mini accordion card, perfect for someone who likes dogs.

I used the pretty Graphic 45 Raining Cats & Dogs Collection, as well as the new Sizzix Mini Heart Album by Jillibean Soup. The vintage dog stickers are so cute, and were given central stage on this card. The base was die cut from patterned paper and since these papers are double-sided they were perfect for the card. There is a flap that folds down behind the die cut shapes (the heart, label and butterfly), so the paper you see through the die cut openings is the back of the text paper. This is an XL die so you need the extended cutting pads.

I glued the positive heart shape on top of the negative die cut and added some dimension by folding the heart in the middle. I also added some word stickers and printed chipboard shapes.

The 'My Dog' sticker was placed on top of a chipboard button.

The card is only 2 in high and it is fun to work in this small format now and then.

On the front, I added the die cut label from the inside, another chipboard shape and a sentiment.

Thank you so much for looking!
